911 HERO Award

On March 2, 2013, at 12:52 p.m. Allen County Dispatcher Amy Barron received a 911 call from 12 year old Tony Buuck who reported his eight year old sister had fallen through the ice. Tony was playing basketball in the driveway when his sister fell into the pond in their backyard. Tony bravely attempted to save her himself by going out onto the ice and he also fell into the frigid water. He treaded water with one hand and held his unconscious sister's head above water when his dad ran out and fell through the ice as well. Tony said "I began by taking my arms and sort of putting it under her shoulders. I realized that wasn't going to work so I grabbed her coat hood." Dale Buuck was able to thrash through the ice and pull the children out. Tony, completely exhausted then ran into the house to call 911. Tony received CPR instructions from Dispatcher Barron and his father performed CPR until emergency workers arrived. With Tony's quick thinking and the extraordinary bravery of both he and his dad, his sister's life was saved. Dispatcher Barron skills provided a vital link in saving Samantha's life. This award is sponsored by ERS Corporation.
